didn’t sleep last night, went to work feeling faint and came home, slept. Reviewed ‘the curious incident of the dog…’, went to video shop, rented ‘Hero’ and ‘The Control Room’. Still not 100%… 2 days to sita’s QEs. 3 days to Atticus getting a bath.
I’m still a fan actually. 2 become 1 still hits the spot… Ginger Spice was my fave. I was so young, with so much to learn.

Just had to leave the office and go home to check in on everyone after I got the alarming message that our kitchen had exploded. Sita had lit the oven to make toast for her and Pat. The flame had gone out and the kitchen smelled of gas. She tried to light it again, only to have it explode, shunting the cupboards to the side of it about 4 inches, blowing open the doors and firing all the hobs/rings all over the kitchen. Obviously just the wrong combination of butane and air… Sita got off with a ringing in her ears and a sudden crowd of neighbours and Avon ladies advising her to eat bread to get over the shock… Blimey. Quite a morning. Anyroad, it looks like the stove´s alright and after putting things back in their place Sita seems OK too, and luckily she´s got the ever-reliable Pat for company. Looks like it´ll be The Waffle Factory on Avenida Mexico for breakfast though… The photo is of my little desk in me office, there’s a couple more photos on Flickr of the view of the plaza and the bar where Sita and I met, and where we took Pat last night before a meal of Ropa Vieja in the Cuban restaurant, La Bodeguita del Medio.
…using a combination of knowledge from my PHP classes (I’m about to sign up for the advanced classes for next week) and this page on how to Search and Replace using PHPMyAdmin so now the apostrophe issue is cleared up and there aren’t enough other errors to make it worth my while. My Spanish blog‘s another story though, I ended up going in and editing each entry by hand… Luckily there aren’t that many pages.
So, it’s still raining and starting to get colder just in time for Stu’n’Anne’s visit. Hope they don’t mind too much. Atticus is certainly a bit bothered by it all and is showing early signs of SAD. He’s missing M&D too, mind, who phoned last night to say they’d spent 15 hours on the road and had made it Los Mochis, of all places. They’ve set a new record, they’re probably somewhere near the Canadian border if they’ve kept up the pace.
We watched Pan’s Labyrinth again last night, as Sita hadn’t seen it. I’d forgotten how powerful a film it is. It’s the ultimate fable on rejecting authority and a gruesome depiction of post civil war Spain. I saw the Devil’s Backbone (El Espinazo del Diablo) t’other week too which takes place in the same era but doesn’t have as clear a division between fantasy and reality. Still fine viewing though. Had a game of Scrabble too. I got all the good tiles…
In terms of the HTMLery I’m going to be putting together a shopping site for a high-end artesanal jewelry store to complement their flash site soonish which’ll be interesting and a chance to practice my PHP skillz. Also I read the readme file that came with the photoblog theme and it explained how to have thumbnails on the archive page, so I sorted that out. Looks quite nice, oi reckon. Shame i’ve now got two blogs that don’t quite render right on IE6 though, but frankly IE6 users deserve all they get.
And that’s all for today. Next up, dragging Atticus through the rain to pick up El Público with its weekly events listing, Ocio, and then paying the phone/interweb bill, rent, and PHP course… it’s going to be an expensive day this one…
So today I thought I´d hired someone to turf the garden where Atticus had dug his trench, turns out I just bought the turf, well it was only 175 pesos, what did I expect… anyway, I used to do this kind of thing when I was a landscape gardener back in the day. Turns out I´ve lost the knack, but lets see how it goes. At this stage of the year things grow out of concrete. If all else fails we´ll spend another 8 quid getting the pros in the day before the house inspection…

There´s a whole US-UK mismatch in language for turfing. Possibly because of the confusion around the word “sod”.
So, we now have two additions to the menagerie. (Our neighbour) Christine rang us on Sunday to see if we were around to meet her friend who wanted to ask us to rabbit and guinea pig sit for her while she was on holiday. We said OK, and arranged for said friend and her critters to come round on Sunday afternoon to meet us. She came along with enough pet supplies to sink a battleship, a bottle of Trader Joe’s Chilean wine and Puff (G-Pig) and Merlin (rabbit) and the assumption that we’d say yes.
We promptly learned that she’d be away, incommunicado, in Yurop for a full month. So Klem and Lulu are doing their best to get used to the new additions to the room. Lulu’s become v. territorial and Klem is bearing the brunt of Lulu’s behaviour. Sita too is coming to terms with sharing an office that’s looking increasingly like a vet’s waiting room and a fridge resembling a well-stocked Safeway aisle.
Puff is an inscrutable little beastie, he wanders in and out of his igloo pausing occasionally to make thrumming noises and throw quizzicle looks at us. Merlin was still in a state of shock when I left this morning from his car ride over here. Anyroad, photos’ll be appearing around these parts of how Sita’s foster kids are doing.
Atticus, not so much.
