Another site good to go

Speak Spanish? Looking for affordable, quality daycare / primary education for your offspring. …and live near Plaza del Sol in Guadalajara? Well you may want to check out Centro Educativa Nueva Era’s spanking new site. Another fine product from the offices of plaza bonita.

If you thought getting domain names and hosting sorted out is easy, you’d be right. However, just you try it if your domain ends with .MX (the mexican .uk). I’ve made more phonecalls in the last 2 days than in all my time here… You can either pay with PayPal (I hate PayPal) or in a bank and then fax the receipts in to the hosting service. Sometimes Mexico is right up there at the cutting edge of it all, and other times it’s like some Kafkaesque third-world state. Mind you, so’s the UK. Still all appears to be v.well now.

Came across an interesting (somewhat subjective, but hey ho) site this morning with animal noises in different languages (on the University of Adelaide’s Engineering page (¿?)) This bloke didn’t get all the English noises right, “lap lap” is the noise a drinking dog makes apparently, so there may be a fair few mistakes. But it features the classic Cock-a-doodle-doo versus ki-kiri-ki cockeral noise conundrum so I’m happy. Neither really do justice to what is self-evidently “rackalackaooey”, to coin a word.

Alright back to work. My mouse forgot itself at me at home I forgot to bring my mouse to work and now I have to spend 7 hours fiddling around with a touchpad. Arse. NOT good for graphic design, even with the nimblest of fingers

  1. Stumped me there, dad. WordReference.com’s never heard of it and if you search for teclado and touchpad, it seems to be written in english throughout. I’ll ask tomorrow in the office…

Nice link: If everyone would follow it and vote on the panel at the side that lucha libre is a “deporte” (sport) rather than “farsa” (a farce) I’d be much obliged. Right now we’re losing by 90% to 10% or so… They don’t know what they’re missing…

  2. What other sound would a drinking dog make except “lap, lap”? I think that is more or less correct. I would like to say that that animal sounds page is a great find!

And I feel that a truer statement has practically never been written than this one: “Sometimes Mexico is right up there at the cutting edge it all, and other times it's like some Kafkaesque third-world state.” But things are looking up! Hope to see you guys soonish.

  3. Hope to see you too, Sarah, you’re always welcome at motel garibaldi 🙂

    “Slurp, slurp”, “slip, slap”, “grrrrsplashgulp”

  4. Jedd says hi in his own way- and was no help when I struggled over ‘cupo limtado’ in yr school site. I got mizzled by preterite of ‘caber’….

  5. Hi 2u2 young Jedi.

Yeah i think it's a mexicanismo that one. “Limited space” as I'm sure you now know.

I asked about Touchpad today in the office and was met with blank looks. Any spanish speakers know how to say it?

  6. I don’t think there’s a translation, I always say “touchpad”. See http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touchpad

Weird thing about your domain… are you dealing with nic.mx directly? I pay my domains with a credit card, never had a problem with that.

Oh, there is a problem with “.org.mx”, “.net.mx” and the likes… they won’t give you one of these unless you’re a certified non-profit, or network provider, etc. But getting a “.com.mx” is quite painless in my experience.

  7. nic's actually pretty good, it's the hosting company who I won't name because they're very friendly apart from the whole payment thing. I shouldn't complain really, the fact is I like chatting with strangers in customer service. 🙂

  8. Oye, muchisimias gracias tienes toda la razon sobre la galeria, allí voy a arreglarlo. En serio, te debo, césar… 🙂
