Can´t really call it busy…

…but I’m filling me time. I’m trying to reign in the scrabble, boggle and moviegoing and just do stuff i won’t be able to do in a couple of months, like wandering round soaking up the mexicanidad with me camera(s).

On Tuesday Sita came back from the States, Colorado Springs sounds like a nice neck of the woods, fingers crossed and all that. I had me photography class and then we went to CosCafe. On Wednesday I went to the Mercado de Abastos and Jose came round in the evening. Yesterday i caught up with Boxer at his hamburger stand and then went to take some photos of the Hospicio Cabañas for a postcard competition they´ve got going, then a few beers in La Fuente and catching up with Javier. Time is flying by at a dizzying pace. Tomorrow Fernando´s grilling for us round his house…

Ooh, and i was made an “officer” for Ros´s Facebook group “You know you´re from Somerset when…” . My tagline: Bringing the sombrero to the South West…

If things are quiet at this blog, might I suggest a visit to me photoblog, which I´m still managing to update more or less daily.

  1. Gwyn,

I love your blog! Can’t stop going through your pictures, amazing.
I was in Guadalajara in October, it is one of my favorite places. Seeing your pics and reading your experiences is definately a vicarious pleasure.
BTW, Colorado Springs (I live in Denver) is a pretty decent “neck of the woods”.
    Keep up the good work.

  2. Cheers SAzcuy, glad you like it. Comments like that make my day. Many thanks.

Comments about erroneous homonyms are also welcome, Dad 😀

  3. recently started reading your blog-great pix. where was the one at the top of this entry taken? great shot-very interesting angle. congrats on winning the camera.

  4. Bienvenida Teresa! Many thanks for commenting and the congrats 😀

The picture is the centre of Guadalajara, it´s 3 shots stitched together of the cathedral and various government buildings slap bang in the middle of the city.

  5. i thought i recognized the cathedral-i was there last winter and will be there again this coming spring, during semana santa. i just tried 3 different times to send in a comment and for some reason it didn’t go through. it said, “saludar nuestras banderas no es militar, es patriotismo. no es la misma cosa. solo es tener orgullo en nuestros paises. hope this goes through, if not, i am giving up.

  6. Hi Teresa, thanks for persevering with the comments.

If people want to salute their flag that’s fine by me; however, personally I see it as a nationalistic gesture rather than a patriotic one. Something that may stem from growing up in the UK where there are all kinds of jingoistic overtones tied up with brandishing the Union Jack. It also seems to be a form of worship of the government and the status quo of a country. I try to show my patriotism in other ways.

But to each their own and all that.

Where’d you learn your excellent Spanish btw?

  7. oh no, patriotism is not the worship of one’s government, it is to love and defend one’s country. i’m glad you do show patriotism in whatever way you choose, as you said, to each his own.

thanks for the compliment on my spanish. it’s actually my first language as i am originally from cuba. have been in the states for 45 of my 53 years.

    have a great week!

  8. Just came back from the photoblog. I absolutely *love* the last three entries at this time (“Centro Historico de Guadalajara”, the shoeshiner, and the bracelet).

    You’re good. You’re also a bloody show off 😀

Interesting musings on patriotism. Funny you mention it having to do with your UK upbringing… because I see things in much the same way, and I’m used to attribute that to a rational rejection, a posteriori, of my Mexican patriotic indoctrination. Heh.

I think patriotism is just a shade in a spectrum of the same basic feeling, starting with loyalty and allegiance to your own people, all the way to flag-waving chauvinism. So it’s not necessarily evil, but it can be.

(must. resist. saying. “bush supporters”… gah, fail!)

To be fair, I don’t remember seeing a single instance of Mexican patriotism going so wrong as to be downright evil… but I do think we exaggerate at times.
