Can you help me with something from work?

I’ve been faffing about trying to get a video to show up in cinescopio’s webpage. It’s the demo for the company. Here’s the dilemma: you need quicktime 7 installed which is a pain to download (cos they try to foist iTunes on you too), but it’s much better quality. I thought about using Flash but you still need the latest version to get decent video. There’s always the .AVI option with wide compatibility but crappy compression. My question, por favor, is when you click on this link and wait 30 seconds or so, are you presented with a state-of-the-art company demo, or just a bunch of error messages. Many many thanks in advance.

  1. Worked for me but I had (as you say) to update QuickTime & I-wotsit.
Didn’t know you were involved with so many beautiful young ladies- I must speed up plans to visit.
Certainly very edgy, very now, very latino.
Never sure if you can assume viewers will be up to date or prepared to install updates…
Skype- I think the mike was unplugged or switched off- seems OK again.

  2. I'm using a PC in a hostel and as ever they rarely have the latest updates of plug-ins, if at all, so it asked me if I wanted to download it.

When I've done video in the past we've either used Real (like the BBC) or offered a range of choices. I would suggest encoding it in several formats (maybe QT, .avi and .mpeg) and allow the user to click on the one they prefer (or think they have), rather than present them with the movie embedded in the page straight away, then you have more chance of it being viewed.

Offer the option to get the latest versions of all formats too as you have with your demo. Apart from that there's little you can do. If people want to view rich media they have to be prepared to get the plug-ins.

For those on locked down corporate networks you might also offer the options to get in touch directly with your company and send out a DVD showreel, which is worth producing at full quality as you then ave something to use in presentations, playing on reception etc. If you're lucky they'll bootleg it and sell it in the market in Guad!

    Good luck

  3. really usefull feedback, folks- many thanks. I’ll get going on all those options… and the San Juan de Dios bootleg. Or I could just stealthily swap the DVD with Tarzan II in the stalls…
