I’m in the process of wiping my hard drive and starting again from scratch. Not fun. Presently in the planning stages, listing all the CDs and downloads I have to find to reinstall my programs, from essentials, like XP, Office, Firefox, etc to when-i-get-the chance programs like Google Earth and Audacity. Then there’s all the photos, videos, mp3s, drivers, translations, extensions, websites, you name it, to back up to an external hard drive…
The computer’s shutting down with alarming frequency, and though the heat is definitely a factor, this reinstall needs to be done. I took it apart and the fans and vents are all clean, but something’s amiss. If this nuclear option doesn’t sort it out I’ll not be best pleased…
It died a horrible death… luckily I’d backed up everything but now I’m using Sita’s comp to work and have forgotten the passwords and all that to log into my blog to post. Engineers are poring over my computer as I type and they’ll have the diagnosis tomorrow afternoon at 3… Please cross your fingers everyone…
I sympathise. The laptop you passed on to me also sometimes dies after a processor- or hdd-intensive episode. Unfortunately there are no options to down-clock most laptops to reduce power consumption… and you can tell it’s coming as the fan ramps up to full speed and fails to control the situation. At least restart usually works…
So it needs a new fan and hard drive. Both specific parts that have to be shipped from Mexico city… Arse. On the plus side, Dra. Ana is going to lend me her desktop till the parts get in. Saved again…
I had to build some little legs for Amanda’s lappy. The air circulation underneath helps out with her chronically overheated Toshiba. There are also a few free motherboard temp monitors that allow you to keep closer tab on when you are overheating. Good luck getting back up and running. Last time mine went down, I bought an external drive.
oooo, I had to wipe and start over in January. Sucks, dude.
Thanks, UMASS tech support!
The repair place called today to say they might be able to resurrect the machine so I can use it until the replacement fans arrive from HP in Mexico City…
I'm also going to glue some pesos together to make some artesanal legs so the heat can have a chance to escape and maybe bolt on a box fan…
