Off to Kilcar tomorrow- Exeter -> Belfast and on to County Donegal. Back Sundayish. Flippin’ marvelous to see Bert, Anne, Stu and friends at the weekend in London. Met media types, danced to DJ Bert, had pasties, kebabs and sunday roasts and finally got something back from the Salvation Army. Cheers everyone. Typical that a mountain of work falls on my lap just before making plans to go sightseeing this weekend. I stayed late yesterday doing as much as I could for various people. There’s graphic design, websites and translations all on the go and today we’re driving to Zacatecas. We’ve got someone looking after the house though. With a big stick. All you English-speaking, net-savvy burlgars. So there… Posts and pictures will be forthcoming but there may well be blog silence for a while… We haven’t got any decent road maps of the area north of Guad, so we may end up in Aguascalientes if the navegation doesn’t go to plan. Anyway, as per usual, you’ll read all about it here. Have a lovely weekend all : )
Oh and Feliz Cinco de Mayo if you’re in the States right now. It’s not a big deal in Mexico itself. Wait for September…
And I’ve added another room to the mansion here. There used to be a room halfway up the patio stairs that doubled as a storeroom/ cockroach graveyard. I’ve just tidied it, swept it and painted the walls and once I’ve done the ceiling I’ll have a decent little office and should free up some room around the place. What did people do before wireless internet? Just have to get a cordless phone and away we go. Again.
Have another misty photo from yesterday of Tonalá’s latest craze- Follow-you-round-the-room-Jesus . I reckon he’s looking at Daniel to my left, mind. Just as unsettling as one of my favourite YouTube videos.
Well while Sita tried to meet up with Dr. Muria (famous tequila historian) I gave my CV to the Museo de Arte de Zapopan to see if they needed anyone with my particular skill set. I won’t hear from them for 2 weeks apparently. Anyroad, spent a nice afternoon in Zapopan and went on to Zapopum, the expo/art showcase thing down the road from there. The highlight was the trained dog show- it was being televised for a local TV station and we were encouraged to look as enthusiastic as possible for the cameras. I wasn’t really getting into it until it all started going wrong as the dogs got collective stage fright. “They were all fine this morning” we were assured. Still we saw a corgi jumping through flaming hoops and I’m full of ideas to try out on Atticus when we get back to the US in the Spring for a few days.
So we´ve been to the cinema a few times this week and one of the adverts is for some car or other called the Edge or summink. Where Bono wanders into a record shop and the employees there are all excited “Is it really him”, then “Bono” leaves in his fancyish car. (Video below. Obviously)…
Sita and I had a heated debate about whether it was really Bono or not. First off the bloke looks just like Bono, BUT, he´s driving a pretty crappy car, there´s no U2 music in the ad and I don´t think Bono needs the cash from a cinema-only ad in Latin America and lastly I remembered some story or other on Weekend America or This American Life about a Bono Lookylikey taking advantage… And since I have my own corner of the interweb and Sita has nowt I can reveal to you that NO ES BONO. (As I type sita is saying “I can´t believe you´re blogging this…”, that´ll learn her for not even getting on FaceBook).
The evidence? Megafan.com.mx´s exposé and link to the impersonator´s site where in his list of gigs he mentions “11.22.06 Ford Motor Corp, Mexico City, Mexico”. Ta da!
It speaks fairly ill of Ocean´s 13 that I´m writing about the advert before it rather than the film itself…
Another day, another picture of Sita posing with people in costume. Yesterday we went to Guadalajara’s annual pet expo, which had something for everyone. Sita got to spend time with dogs because she misses Atticus something chronic. I got to experiment with low light indoor settings on my camera (with limited success). I also won a rubber ball. One stand was asking questions like what was Lassie’s name, how many dogs make 5? etc. then they asked does anyone have a photo of their dog in their pocket? And I couldn’t resist so I whipped out the picture (it’s v. small, it’s from the catalogue page of all your photos when you order prints) and won myself the prize. They asked ‘De dónde nos visitas?’ and I said Inglaterra, which is probably the furthest anyone’s every come to visit their expo. After all the fun of the fair (photo slideshow here, incidentally, CAUTION, Mum, MAY CONTAIN IGUANAS- have cushion ready at the ready) we were off to Gigante for supplies and Sita made a v. nice lemony chicken affair and I made the guacamole. The picture’s of me in the kitchen modeling my brand new Parque Metrolpolitano Voluntario T-Shirt…
And, as promised, here’s my rendition of Land of My Fathers the Welsh national anthem. I can’t say I was overly familiar with it but I likes a challenge. It’s not exactly the Morriston Orpheus Male Voice Choir, in fact it’s more like a cross between a Greek drinking song, an Italian wedding and a Welsh primary school recorder club, but here we go. Comment away and keep the requests coming, something more upbeat next time Click here to download/ play this, frankly poor, start to the series…landofmyfathers.mp3 (1396k file)
