The importance of learning a second language… or even just a few useful words.
Locals in Toledo, Spain heard an American screaming for “Help” in English and thought he was shouting “Pepe” over and over again. It wasn’t until some multilingual German passers-by heard him that the fire brigade was called and he was fished out of the river Tajo after 3 hours of rope action. He was fine by all accounts afterwards and treated for hypothermia.
Help is “Socorro” just for the record. As in succour. A bummer actually, cos I can’t pronounce my double Rs in Spanish… I’ll probably alternate it with ¡Ayúdame! (Help me!) when I’m stuck down a hole.
Daniel’s gone for the weekend, but according to a search “Fördern” might well be Help! in German. Please don’t sue if it isn’t mind…
Fancy checking out the beta phase of my latest creation? Well in that case, hie thee hence to Sinescopio- Diseño Web y Traducción desde Guadalajara, Mexico. And tell your spanish-speaking web-site-needing friends 😉
Blimey I on bert’s phone. Might explain later, just testing the system… RSS…
*edit* OK, I shall explain just had a long chat with bert and he mentioned his mobile phone could handle RSS feeds and now he’s got my blog on his phone. It’s one of those days for technological firsts.
So César, Sita and I are off to the Indian place again this evening- see you there? And while I’m at it, thanks for all your comments. I’m indebted for you for noticing those broken links. Much obliged and it’s nice to have it all delivered with the perfect english of a graduate of the Red Dwarf Academy of Language.
On the plus side, it went smoothly enough at the tax place- half an hour, in and out… On the down or “delta” side, as we say in Santa Cruz non-profit circles, we owe more than a grand to the US government to spend on evil. The bloke was trying to get us to put money in IRAs or somesuch, which strikes me as a really bad acronym to use to encourage people to save. How’s about putting your earnings in a PLO or an ETA? Any takers? Thought not… Ah well. Feel strangely vindicated, I expected the worst and it happened. I always feel vaguely apprehensive when we get refunded money. So it’s all good. Anyroad, Liz & Mya are round and we’re going to watch Firefly, Joss Whedon’s sci-fi thing. Lovely.
Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin dead.
I’ve been up since 6 as I was getting eaten alive by mozzies sheltering from the thunderstorm and hungry for European blood. I’ve got bites on me bites and a packed day ahead. My Spanish definitely suffers when I’ve not slept so I hope I don’t sound too foreign at various meetings today. It’s tricky formulating the subjunctive and describing OSCommerce admin when you barely have enough coordination to make a coffee and scratch your elbow at the same time without burning your hand…
Here’s another video unearthed from YouTube on Saturday. It’s by Mexico’s veteran indie band, Café Tacuba from their Cuatro Caminos album which Monica gave me for Xmas a few years ago. Gorgeous song, and lovely video. Enjoy! *DJ Voice* This one’s dedicated to me missus out there in LaLaLandia, California. Team O… *End of DJ Voice*
