It’s not all work, work, work
Yes it is. I had my first 13 hour day yesterday and I have four meetings to attend today at the last count. Definitely won’t be many new book and film reviews for a while…

Can’t compare it to yesterday’s screening of Serenity in London (great review from Londonist here). but the 40 year old virgin and Rilo Kiley & John Cale gig were not bad at all. Sita reckoned that 40-yr-old was the best film of the Summer yet, she might be right, i laughed a lot for a (sober) matinee… still, roll on Serenity.
It hit 96 degrees in Downey yesterday hence all these trips to the air-conditioned cinema, shall be v. glad to see clouds come Thursday.
A few photos from yesterday here…
Well the plan was to go to La Fuente cantina @ 8am (when the England vs Paraguay match starts over here), but I didn’t make it after a latish night sampling the wares of Sacromonte (new top 5 Guadalajara restaurant) and a few drinks at the bar opposite. i can’t remember its name, but its logo is the same as Enron’s (a slanted E) and finished off with Dr.Who (Cheap and cheerful cross between The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, The Matrix, The 5th Element and er, Dr. Who). A well nice evening all round. So I watched the match at home, good first half, dull second half… but we won… Then I spent an hour or so pestering people around the world on Skype and now I have to do stuff: Sort out the divine salon . com .mx website, source a Sopranos DVD set and a few other minor errands. Sita’s got the camera cos she’s off with her professor friend and a gaggle of reporters interviewing tequileros in the countryside. It’s harder to motivate myself to go out if I don’t have my camera on me, but I’ve got a few new podcasts to keep me busy. Found a great kareoke program too, more of which later. Comment if you’d like me to post my rendition of The Bangles’ Eternal Flame… Darlin’
Instead of full blown reviews, check out the ‘Consumed’ iFrame to the right (bottom IE users) in 10 minutes or so… Righty, a la chamba…
Glad to report that Merlin the rabbit is starting to show signs of a nascent personality. If it wasn’t for him hopping around, I probably wouldn’t have watched “13 going on 30” in its entirety last night. Photos definitely coming soon… of the rabbit and guineau pig that is.
Sita and I are off to a pub quiz in 99 bottles of beer. The team’s going to be a bit depleted but we’ll do our best without the sports and natural history experts. We came second a fortnight ago, thanks in large part to the British bias of the questions (It’s called “A Brit of Trivia” and is run by a bloke from Bolton in the North of England). Knowing the only poisonous snake in the British Isles (the adder) helped no end. Also Sita has an encyclopaedic knowledge of dodgy 80s US sitcom themes. “perfect strangers” anyone? Standing tall…
Anyroad, I’ll blog how we did in the quiz. Up for grabs are 10 pints or an “entree”. The usual winning team is called “The Wankers” and we have suspicians they’re a bunch of treacherous, cheating gits.
Last night we went to Tinto y Blanco for the first time. It’s owned by a sommalier/chef bloke and is famous for its wines, so we felt quite safe ordering carafes of the house red. Sita reckoned the Pinot was where it’s at though. The portabella appertiser was the best thing we had there, though my asparagus and mushroom crepe was well nice. Having returned recently from the British Isles it’s nice to convert the prices to pounds sterling and feel even better about what you’re eating. Anyroad, then on to bowling. Somewhere along the line, my thumb’s got bigger and thus a shot where I couldn’t let the ball go and ended up chucking it in the air and it landing somewhere half-way down the lane, amazingly without leaving some smoking crater… It was a dodgy game all round, though Monica improved 10 fold, Daniel was consistantly brilliant and Sita’s always been a great bowler. I was not on form… Any road. We’ll play the decider once our scars heal.
doesn’t mean I can’t post a link or four.

I’ve a suspicion, these are a viral attempt to sell more postits. “Office prank”
Shakira’s on Jay Leno’s pig of a show singing her little heart out on YouTube. It’s a new song from the latest adaption of Love in the time of Cholera, which I’ll go and see because it combines my two favourite Colombians, though I wasn’t blown away by the book. Not the best quality clip, but augers very well.
And finally, this one’s for you Sita and Cousin F (though you’ve prob’ly seen it already): Tom Cruise interview on his misguided beliefs
I tried phoning me family in Blighty, but no-one’s home so I’ve resorted to the interweb again to spend a while catching up on the news 6000 miles or so away. Naturally, I soon got distracted and found myself on this here site: www.infinitecat.com Recursive felines, just what you need on a bright and sunny Saturday morning.
I didn’t catch all of the presidential debate last night, but in the half hour i did see I got to see Bush shouting like a spoilt child at the moderator and talking about the Internets (sic). A search on the new engine www.a9.com has a snapshot of the front page of Gwynunlimited with the bloke with the “Bush is crap” banner from the peace march in SF last year, which tickled me, probably better than the Easter Rabbits one. Anyroad, there’s no chance of me ever getting to vote in the US, but at least I managed to register to vote in Somerset in my short stay over last month.
