Living the gastro-intestinal cliché
I’ve been a bit poorly of late. Nothing serious, but nothing pleasant neither. Normal service to return tomorrow hopefully… And who knew Pedialyte actually tastes OK?

I saw these potatoes in Safeway today. They’re individually wrapped ‘Bakers’ with instructions on how to microwave them (‘7 minutes’). No warnings that once microwaved, contents may be hot.
Due to the fact I’m working about 4 different jobs right now, blogging is going to be a little more sparse from now on. There’s more meetings than you can shake a stick at in my near future, so whilst relishing the chance to get to know the movers and shakers in the Santa Cruz non-profit world, I may be a tad too busy to publish pictures of me in pumpkin fields… but you never know… anyroad, just wanted to let “y’all” know about how life’s going round my way. There’ll definitely be pix of Judith and Carlos’s nuptials next weekend, Mariachi and all… Cheers, gwyn
Judith and Carlos’s wedding was something to behold.
I’m glad I took a few photos so I’d remember the later stages of the afternoon… They’ll be along in the usual place in a couple of days.
I’ve never seen so many people go from zero to full-throttle dancing in so short a time. Fair play to the mariachi and the banda. I’ve got a 15 second video from me camera with a blast of banda- it’s like a trip-hop beat coupled with a full-on brass section, amplified, and fronted by a smiley Mexican man who is the only one who doesn’t get to wear a pink shirt. I almost danced too, but chickened out at the last second. Again. I’m looking forward to hearing who, among the anglos, actually made it to the end of the evening. Sita & I sheepishly retreated at the grand old time of sunset. Judith’n’Carlos are off to Maui tomorrow I think, best of luck to ’em. Judith knows how to plan a party…
Sita’s area of research for her PhD is the commodification of identity or the identity of commodification or some such, it all goes over my head really, anyroad, basically she’s studying tequila and its image. So this limited edition bottle we picked up yesterday from Shopper’s Corner should be worth a paragraph or two.
More DVDs arrived yesterday- Spaced Collector’s Edition and Nick Frost’s Danger 50,000 Volts. Great to watch Spaced again, but not as good as watching them round bethan’n’ali’s. Maybe it was the company, maybe the jaffa cakes, maybe the stella artois, or maybe all three. ‘Adam and Joe Go Tokyo’ was grand, they’re looking old though. Found some of their songs from the Adam and Joe Show here. My favourites’re the Robert DeNiro calypso, it’s been going round my head since I heard it again and the Bob Hoskins ‘How’s yer father, have a banana, etc.’ one. Enjoy!
I’ve been looking around some Massachusetts blogs and it’s been snowing there. i miss the cold weather and the attendant cancellations of classes, work, travel, etc. A ski trip to Tahoe is in the initial planning stags though, and they had 25 feet of white stuff in the last storm.
Saturday: Round Ana’s house meeting her family and friends and having a lovely time of it. Excellent food, drink, company… Then Jose picked me up and we went to scope out the barrio he’s thinking of moving to and stopped for a coffee. Then the heavens opened and we barely made it, thanks to Jose’s submarino/WV beetle, to La Matera to catch up with Jeanna y Victor, wine, tequila, beer flowed and kept on flowing till the early hours with V & PF in the house. We also spent an alarming amount of time browsing Jose’s favourites on YouTube. Dodgy 80s videos every one… Might have to instigate some new house rules banning Hall and/or Oates.
Sunday: Nipped into Santa Tere via Starbucks then came home and Jose came round again and we caught up on the latest events in his life that is ‘regida por lo riduculo’ (Governed by the ridiculous). A lot can happen in 24 hrs in GDL…
Monday: Woke up late and got a phone call from Martin and Luis to meet them and Ana in the town centre to go cantina hopping as it’s Martin’s last day and Ana’s area of research. Made it to the centre in odd socks and sandals (blister prevention, and I had hopes of going trainer shopping) and went first to the Velatorio (now called the Jardin Nuevo or somesuch) a v. old cantina replete with pix of old GDL and page-3 girls just behind las Cabaas. A friendly bunch there as ever. Then on to ‘Mi Oficina’ which I’m surprised i didn’t know since it’s not far from Federalismo and I thought I knew that area. Then back to Independencia for El Sin Rival.
Hence the break I need. Not looking for sympathy though, it’s been a grand few days.
I got a comment on my Cars that Resemble Where they’re parked set suggesting I put them to music and shove them on YouTube. Always glad for a new project so here you go:
What else? Well, the site redesign’s coming along nicely. Nowt uploaded yet. And there’s a hefty translation to do at the end of the week so work/pleasure is nicely balanced right now. Righty time for brunch i thinks. Hasta pronto!
The Skype me button on the right… Very soon we’ll be in Mexico and at TelMex’s mercy once again, so download Skype by pressing that ‘call me’ button and give us a ring on the computer… Tanya…
Also, I’m working on some interwebbery for a local nutritionist- have a gander at the design, the brief for which was “lush and green”. Am quite chuffed with the look, but it’s preliminary draft.
