but it’s ironic (in an Alanis Morisette (sp?) kinda way) how I only have time to update this blog when I’ve been doing nothing, but then a week like this comes along and you get 0 posts despite there being so much news I don’t know where to start.
I’m off to bed…
It’s been nearly 3 weeks since I watched a new film. That’s how busy I’ve been. Shame it had to be Mission Impossible 3 though. Rating from me, barely 3 lulus and from Sita, a solid 3 lulus. It’s one of those overwhelming action films which never stops. Time bombs in people’s heads that can only be defused by near fatal electric shocks… Impregnable fortresses… exotic locations… and guns, guns, guns. This is normally just my kind of thing, but it was layed on so thick it was hard to take it all in. Shellshocked I was when we left. In the first 25 minutes I was hoping there was going to be a theme running through it where the Cruiser reprised all his past acting roles. Early on he’s mixing a drink, a la Cocktail, then riding his motorbike at dawn, a la Top Gun. Then I lost track. The next film should be more sedate. Or X Men 3…
It was the last part of a nice evening out trying contemporary Mexican cuisine at a new (3 yrs old or so) restaurant in Avenida Mexico. Thorougly recommended, it’s called something like Polibio 131 and was the third deserted, but high quality restaurant we’ve been to in 7 days. Make sure you order desert. They come drenched in rompope…
This morning I’ve been doing the translations for the Queer Youth Leadership Awards again. United States of America readers can help the cause sending a not-so-virtual postcard via this link. It’s a petition to the US gov. to get them, if not to actually allow gay marriage, then to stop them changing the constitution to prevent it for ever. Baby steps… Spanish speakers need to start reclaiming some of the epiphets that go around in the language. I’m translating queer youth as jóvenes gay and it doesn’t have the same connotations yet. To work, mis cuates…
From the Assistant Dean…

While watching telly last night we were dismayed to see that Mexico’s top scientists have cloned Anne Robinson (off of The Weakest Link (El Rival Mas Debil))). Same voice pattern, hair, Gestapo jacket and she even winks at the end. God help us all. At time of writing I don’t know whether she’s a recovering alcoholic too though…
We went to the Baratillo market today, it was nice to get there in our own car rather than public transport. Didn’t buy anything but saw some cheap beds. I and got SPSS 12 for Sr.Barba. There’s a load of pictures from there now added to the Mexico Flickr set I’m making.
We tried to see Wallace and Gromit yesterday, but they only had the dubbed version in the cinema and the voice is muy importante, so I’m going to hold out till there’s a subtitled version. Fought the temptation to buy the wobbly smuggled camcorder DVD of it too. You have to support British directors and all that.
Just before the RSI crippled me. It was an interesting time to be contracting there, what with layoffs, buy out offers, general meetings and the like, however the job was not the most challenging I’ve ever done. On a par with tomato picking, I’d say, back in the old country. Maybe I can get out and take the occasional photo again now, it’s been a while. I’ve a couple of other projects on in the meantime and another interview next Thursday.
I finished stage 1 of the landscaping yesterday. 8 little solar lights and plenty of shade loving cover plants and aromatic ‘erbs. Next stage will involve turfing or mossing but first the neighbour’s going to rebuild the fence and gate so it may take a while. Try and spot the 15 differences between the two photos below…
I’m off to see if I can find the latest issue of Q or Word because I’ve not heard any decent new music in a while. Any recommendations for albums, readers? Portishead’s new one’s coming out in April, but other than that I’ve no idea what the kids are listening to these days. Comes with getting older I s’pose. I even listen to Radio 2 online which can’t be a good sign.
Wish I’d thought of this. Non anglo readers may need this to explain it. We were on the French again last night trying to think of the word for donkey, in a mirror image of the Manuel/Basil burro/butter conversation. âne , according to the internets. And thanks, Martin, for your online French tuition. In Spanish.
Alright, more frequent posts from now on because I’ll have 3.5 hours extra a day where I won’t be commuting. Hasta pronto 😀
