Plastic Agave

We’ve been round various garden centres of late trying to find an agave plant. DrSita ruled the first place out as she asked if agaves would grow in this climate and they answered “Well, it’s a cactus, it should do okay”. One of the first things you learn about agaves is that they’re not cacti.

Several other garden centres haven’t had anything more adventurous that Aloe, but we’re not giving up because a few miles down the road there’s a place selling Pulque (only open on Saturdays and only in bulk).

Anyroad, yesterday at the aforementioned Fred Meyer (pronounced Maya) while BBQ shopping we found this…

Very much a last resort.

  1. Plastic agave, it sould be made in China or Japan, surely.
May be you need import agave hijos, (small agave plants) anyway, the agave grows in your heart, you do no need import any plant

  2. China, definitely. Queríamos importar hijuelos del agave que teníamos en el jardín en GDL pero no te dejan viajar con plantas. En la frontera de California te preguntan si llevas plátanos… The agave grows in your heart, qué lindo! Corázon espinado 😀

The Agave Tequilana article is full of mistakes too. It’s harvested at 8-12 years, the stem (quiote) takes at least 10 years to appear, most reproduction comes via the hijuelos (that appear as soon as one year old) and other stuff too…In the Spanish article, , she’s the international expert and the agave en español article is better written all round.

I’ve never had any luck editing wikipedia articles though, it’s a science in itself…
