Greenville Dog Sled Race – 30 miles
On Saturday I travelled up state to Greenville to watch the dog race. Freezing it was, but it was a great photo op and everyone-crowds, mushers and dogs- looked like they were having as much fun as I was.
I’m planning a post on my neglected blog soon.
Here’s a link to the full set
Black and White Barn
I took this one on a wintry walk round our village with me dad a couple of weeks ago. What I liked here was the sun coming from the right, but the shadows on the fence being the other way round because of the way they affected the drift.
I have to be careful what I write here now ‘cos I don’t want to invite comparisons with Ryan from The (US) Office’s brilliant photoblog that truly skewers photoblog descriptions… Favourite bit yet?
It’s possible my subconscious shot this or perhaps I accidentally took the picture without realizing it. Doesn’t matter. In life, there are no accidents. This is proof. How could something “accidental” be so mysteriously striking. And layered. It’s obviously working on at least three levels, but can you see the fourth and fifth? I dare you to try.
Maine Street, Brunswick
It was coming down thick and fast, the only people out were business owners suddenly demoted to street sweepers and this poor, bedraggled poodle. Atticus was safe and warm back at the house. He’s due a long walk today.
Bowdoin College Campus
You might have already seen this one on my blog or at Flickr. Sorry to repeat post, but I’m quite proud of it. Mainly for managing to get up early enough to capture it… We’re due for more snow tomorrow and I’ve been reading up on snow photography tips.
BTW- Gina, Evan & Adrian, thanks for the card! Little Ady’s looking cuter than ever.
Into the Unknown
I’m still enjoying a steady stream of traffic from vfxy.com. Thank you all for your clicks and comments. Much appreciated.
This one is from Astoria, Oregon last week on a cold, rainy day. I was risking my camera just taking it out in the elements, but I’m happy with how this one turned out. Thanks should go to the Oregon Tourist Association for placing this info board in just the right place.
Starry snowy night
We had another flurry of snow last night, about half an inch, but by the morning it was gone. While it fell I took this long exposure shot with a flash so you get the trails of the snow with some flakes ‘frozen’ by the flash.
Differently-Temperatured People
We got back last night from our Christmas break in Los Angeles and I expected at least some snow to be left, but alas, tis all gone. I feel like I carpe’d the snowy diem though. I didn’t do much shooting in Los Angeles (there’s only so many angles you can take of Old Navy, Sears, Mervyns, Macy’s, Best Buy…) but shall be out and about in the next day or two to see how this mini ice age has affected the Oregonian landscape.
Sorry for the pause in posting too, especially after all the new sign ups. I didn’t want to broadcast to the world that the house would be empty so I just slipped away… I’ll be answering emails and getting your pictures printed and sent very soon. Thank you for your patience, and happy 2009, yo. 😀
Title: Self-Portrait. Medium: Nissan Altima
Who knew that you can press your face into fresh powder snow on a car and you get an insanely detailed imprint. I couldn’t bring myself to do this to the dog so I tried it myself.
If we weren’t heading off out so soon I’d try for a fuller recreation of Han Solo Frozen in Carbonite…
Snow Flash
Not much in the way of technique here except try to keep the camera dry, try to stay warm, and try to keep moving… We’re at well over 2 feet of snow today, it’s still snowing… I made an igloo. Details, pics and details on where to find the video of it over at me blog…
Nuts to be out in this weather
Yeah, cheesy title I know. They don’t have it easy the squirrels round here, if they’re not being chased by Atticus, they’re under nigh on two foot of snow. I forget where, but I recently read that “squirrels are just rats with good PR”.
Also, thanks to Sunday’s publicity drive, I would like to welcome Amy to our small, but vital, community of people-who-get-a-picture-emailed-to-them-daily. Much appreciated 🙂 and if any other subscribees would like a signed photo postcard sent to them (by proper post) just email me which one you’d like and your address. Ta.
I’m just going out I might be a while
Did I say in my last post it wasn’t going to snow any more? I was wrong. Very wrong. We’re presently at about half a foot of quality powder. The footprints on the pond are from a dog, who had another go and ended up falling in and being dragged out by his owners.
Vignetting here comes from a mixture of condensation between the polariser filter and the lens and mystery settings that I couldn’t use my frozen fingers to control… I’m quite fond of it.
Siberia, 1963
Or Portland, 2008 through a Kodak Duaflex II from 1963(ish)…
Looks like the temperatures have risen and from today on there’ll no snow at the metro level. It were good while it lasted.
The Fugitive
Taken surreptitiously as I wandered through a very pretty golf course that was 100% free of golfers for a change. Hope they don’t mind the size 11 foot prints across their well-tended putting greens…
A turn for the cold
I reckon I walked about 8 miles altogether today over treacherous roads and pavements. I nearly fell about a dozen times. When I came back I found that yesterday’s picture of the train had got to #10 on Flickr Explore, which means it made fleeting appearances on the front page and has got favourited to within an inch of its life. I’m well chuffed…
Anyroad, this one is from West Moreland Park (I think). It was deserted because if you had moist hands you’d probably stick to the metal. I spun the roundabout a bit, went for a tiny aperture, user the polariser filter and managed to hold it steady enough an eighth of a second exposure or so to get the varying degrees of blur.
I’m happy how it turned out.
The Polar Express
This shot was a happy accident. I was walking along the railway track and saw a light in the distance coming out of the blizzard, gradually it became obvious it was the train I saw stationed there t’other day and it was belching out steam and making a fair old racket. As it went past, Santa (the American Father Christmas) leaned out and all in all it was a pretty special moment.
I am extremely happy about all the snow that arrived today…
