I still remember doing something similar when I was about 7 in Kingston school. I made an acorn placemat. Actually that should be Acorn, because I was into BBC computers at the time&#8230; There used to be a weaver in our village too using not dissimilar methods.<\/p>\n<p>The Oaxacan valley&#8217;s climate isn&#8217;t ideally suited to rearing sheep so the wool is brought in from Los Altos, the first step is <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carding\">carding<\/a> it to get all the wool fibres going in the right direction.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 332px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"Carding the wool by Guanatos Gwyn, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/g_w_y_n\/4464859371\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/agaveweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/4464859371_d71048b449.jpg\" alt=\"Carding the wool\" width=\"332\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">We card<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After a few minutes of carding the resulting rolag is spun into wool using a hand-turned spinning machine. Cheaper rugs use synthetic dyes, but here they&#8217;re still using a range of natural dyes using local ingredients. There&#8217;s a whole range of colours. Cochineal is used for the reds (the word comes from the Spanish &#8216;cochinilla&#8217;, woodlouse or more literally &#8216;little piggy&#8217;). Though they didn&#8217;t mention it, some kind of mordant is probably used to fix the colours at the end of the process.<\/p>\n<p>When they have enough wools with the colours needed for the rug, it&#8217;s time for the loom.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"Maestro by Guanatos Gwyn, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/g_w_y_n\/4466009532\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/agaveweb.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/4466009532_711090abf5.jpg\" alt=\"Maestro\" width=\"450\" height=\"299\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Weft and warp<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I still can&#8217;t work out how they get the complex patterns into the rugs and I was off taking pictures when they talked about the finer points of the process.
